Femaura have several deaf consultants who can offer you support to enable you to resolve specific issues concerning deaf children.

The NHS carry out a Newborn Hearing Screening across England through a Department of Health programme in order to identify children who are Deaf.  The NHS currently state that in every 2000 babies, 1 or 2 are born with a permanent significant degree of congenital deafness.

There are many inaccurate reports or comments about deaf children's best interests on the internet and there appears to be a distinct lack of awareness and training on the part of the medical professionals who advise the parents of deaf children.  We identified this fact after studying the medical model in depth. The word "deafness" has many negative connotations, which we believe does not truly represent the view of the Deaf Community.

We advised stakeholders, public authorities and parents of deaf children to acquire a balanced view by considering the matter from different perspectives and by seeking professional advice from various sources, particularly from Deaf led Social Enterprises.

Deaf Consultants are experienced in family-friendly environments and are able to give advice relating to the social and linguistic minority model. Based on evidence, they can present various options enabling parents to make an informed decision about how to raise their deaf baby or child using the most appropriate form of communication, for example British Sign Language (BSL). This in turn will contribute to a safe family environment.

We can give advice on the following points:-

  • How to establish sign language communication in the home, where families can choose to communicate with deaf children using BSL to encourage social development.
  • How to empower deaf children in order to maximise their early years and receive ongoing support.
  • Compare and feedback the reality of the deaf community in contrast with other systems.
  • Provide awareness and present a positive view of how authorities and parents can access these procedures and gain support.
  • Provide real experiences as seen from different perspectives and seek how to resolve differences where views conflict.
  • We are able to meet your requirements if there are any other issues that you need to cover.

We are specialists in both consultancy and training for multiple agencies who work with parents of deaf children including:

  • paediatric audiologists
  • teachers of the Deaf working for LEA advisory / support services for deaf children
  • educational audiologists
  • speech and language therapists
  • social workers
  • community paediatricians
  • General Practioners (GP)
  • voluntary organisations
  • parents of deaf children
  • NHS / PCT

We can give guidance, support and assistance to match the needs of deaf children in any setting.  We also offer the development and delivery of quality training to any organisation.

We can provide a diagnostic visit to make sure that we correctly understand your needs.  The first half hour is free with additional hours charged at an agreed cost.  Our fees will take into consideration the specific details of your setting and we will set out clearly defined objectives and outputs as well as a detailed project plan. You will be assigned a lead consultant who will be able to liase with you and manage the project throughout, ensuring that a high quality service is provided. If required, we are happy to provide feedback from surveys or consultation, and advise on Performance Management and Competency plans.

The benefits of having one to one tuition

The benefits of having one to one tuition are many.  You may be enrolled on a sign language course, but you may feel that you do not retain enough of what you have been taught.  If this is the case, you would benefit from additional tuition.  You may wish that you were able to have a little more support and learn just that little more.

Your best option may be a private teacher in a one to one setting, where tuition can be tailored to your specific needs and in an environment where you can feel free to ask as many questions as you wish.  Private tuition means that you will be able to identify your specific weaknesses and work on those areas.  We cater for all levels of BSL from level one right through to interpreter level.  No matter what your BSL skills are at the moment, private tuition will help you to improve those skills and increase your knowledge enabling you to upgrade to the next level more quickly than participation in a course alone.

For example, you may need to collect film clips for your NVQ.  Private tuition can be used for opportunities for portfolio evidence building.  Another example could be if you are desperate to learn sign language, but you have missed the course start date.  You may not want to wait months for another course to start.  Private tuition is the perfect solution for this situation.  Private tuition may also be useful if your course tutor feels that you are not progressing at the same level as the other students in your class, or you do not feel confident signing, and you need opportunities to brush up on your skills.  If you are deaf or hard of hearing yourself, you may feel that your BSL is not as fluent as you would like it to be, then private tuition is also for you.

There are many more reasons for wanting private tuition than mentioned above.  Whatever your reason for needing private BSL tuition, contact us now and we can start working together to improve your skills.

Why should you choose Femaura?

Our sign language teachers were born Deaf and therefore British Sign Language is their first language.  This means they have a vast and wealthy knowledge of the language, and have thirty to forty years of life experience being involved in the Deaf community. They will be straightforward and honest in their feedback and will be able to not only identify weak areas and problems, but also devise strategies to eliminate weaknesses and deal with problems that may be holding you back.  Whatever your request, be it small or large, we aim to match your individual needs.  Take the first step towards better learning opportunities by contacting us here at Femaura.

NEWSFLASH - We have very reduced prices at a limited time period for these offer!

Level  1    £235 plus £50 examination fees = £285

Level 2    £295 plus £98 examination fees = £393

Learning sign language is very important because BSL is part of British culture and history as there have been users of this beautiful visual language as long as there have been groups of Deaf people within our communities.  BSL is a useful thing to learn as it will open up communication with Deaf people in your community.  Deaf people have life experience and knowledge of this beautiful language and you are invited to be involved in learning it and to be able to communicate using it.  By studying this language with Femaura you will  have the key to becoming involved with the Deaf community and learn from them.

We will be running courses in BSL levels one and two.

Our Level one course will be over two evenings each week, every  Monday and Wednesday and will start in January. (You will need to attend both evenings as both are part of the same level one course.)  You may wish to join our level one full day course starting on Wednsdays in January.  Level two will run on Saturdays as an all day class.  For more information on our courses please click on Sign Language Courses in the menu on the right at the top of this page.  If the times of these classes do not suit you, please contact Femaura, and we may well be able to arrange something to suit your needs.
